I'm curious:
How do you pick the names for your OCs?

I got an interesting idea for picking OC names. Within the past couple of years, we've started sitting through movies all the way to the end of the credits when we go to theaters. This is in part because Hollywood has started tacking on cool little tidbits at the end as a reward for staying. To entertain ourselves, we started looking at the names as they scroll by. If you've ever wanted to name your character something interesting, you can get all sorts of inspiration from those folks who worked on the movies. Exotic names, strange combinations, and all right there! I think the next time I go to the theater, I'm actually going to take a scrap of paper with me and try to jot down some of the really cool names I see. :D

Hmmm. As an update on me:
We've lost our black tuxedo cat... He went out one night and hasn't come back... It's been five days. With the heat and the fact that he has no front claws, we're afraid he didn't make it past the third day. I miss him... He used to yowl a lot, t'is true. He'd let us know when it was time to feed him, pick him up, or when we were staying up too late at night. lol. Our new Manx took quite a liking to him, too. Any time he'd yowl at us, she would come running up and mew. Then she'd started rubbing up against him, and he would shy away, fussing at her. It was so funny to watch.

We've not found any black cats (or cats period, as of late) on the roadside, so we figure he wasn't hit by a car or anything... I don't know...

In other news:
This is my last week before I head out to my new dorm. I'm so nervous.... I've spoken with my room mate, so all's cool there. I've got most of everything I'll need...


OoooOOoooh, I like the new journal thing... Shame I don't know how to do CSS... That's something methinks I'll need to learn. :D

o.O How did I get a subscription???? Or is it one of those preview things??? I'll have to check back tomorrow and see if it's still there. :XD:

Aww, poor kitty! You know, if it was a pretty cat and nice, it's entirely likely it was just adopted by someone - barring a collar at least. My old cat, Butterball, would disappear days at a time until he got older and one day, he disappeared for three months and then came back XD He wasn't around much after that, though, and soon left for good... haven't seen him in months and months now.

Oi, I haven't been in a theater in ages! :lmao: But that does seem like a decent way to find good names. Mine, personally, come from strange places... not really sure where I came up with a few of them - like Tyrael, Ashkael, Andariel... though I am sure that Tyrael and Ashkael have BOTH been used in the Diablo series of games for the PC, though, I know that's not where I got them from ;P

For my original character, I got an inspiration from the periodic table of elements on the wall in front of me. XD Believe it or not. Well, at least the first name. If you're curious, I'll tell you in a note.

Oh yeah! Your way of finding OC names is quite useful too. I do that sometimes, especially for last names.

I'm weird about picking names for my OC's. usually I'll just draw them and be like: "Yeaaahhh, he looks like a Victor" or something. Sometimes I base it on their personality and won't have any clue what they'll look like till I draw a random character.

I've totally used that idea, but when I try to jot the names down after the movie, it's too dark... 'tis sad. In naming OCs, I look at them, consider what they're like, consider the people who surround them, consider their mother's and the moods they would have been in when picking their child's name, and then I go through a huge list of names from a site that has something to do with Baby Wizard or something along those lines. And there you have it, you've seen into my mind. Good job.

It's sad that you haven't found Jesse and even sadder that you're going away... T^T At least we have dA.... and gaia...

Man, I hate picking OC names.. they always end up sounding so stupid. :XD: When I was a little anime-obsessed munchkin, my friends and I pretty much either a) made up a name that sounded Japanese or b) combined words that had meanings we wanted.

I hope you find your cat! :'( And that your dorm life isn't bad. ^__^

My OC names come from various sources. Of my current OC names, some are just combinations of real and semi-real names I like (Amelia Laurelyn Windham, Kelsey Lilithia Core, David Owen Sandwell), some are named after places or random words (Merrimack Ransom), and some are just random syllables (Zir, Arik, Sarin, Jeki). I have a few Japanese names among older OCs, but most of them are either English-esque or totally made up. Every so often I'll have some other non-English non-Japanese name. My longest-running OC is Luna del Otono, because despite my uneducated obsession with anime at the time I didn't want to be Japanese, I wanted to be Spanish.

Some are more strange though.
I picked Ceylon's after I thought I overheard someone say their aim username's password was c-e-y-l-o-n. To this day, I can't put together words by spelling them out. So, I had that in the back of my memory. Two years later, I began thinking of letters and I pulled them out of my head onto a piece of paper a few minutes later.

A year later, I accidentally found out that it was also the former name of Shi Lanka.

Seriously?! What the heck is that?



Then, I have the obvious ';pick people I know'.

And finally, I actually anagram words to make names on occasion.

I'm hoping that's all it is... I've been keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that he's a smart enough cat to know water when he sees it. We already know he can catch mice. We're also hoping another cat hasn't found him and torn him up... We do have a few of those around... Tok is especially... finicky about who s/he lets around. (Tok talks a lot. Almost as much as our tuxedo cat, Jesse, did. :XD:)

*le gasp* Seriously? So I'm guessing you've not seen Dark Knight yet, then. It's a good one. :D If nothing else, be sure to rent it when it comes out on DVD! :nod:

lol. Well, inspiration is inspiration. :XD: I've heard of Tyrael before, though I'm not sure where.... ^^;
